Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
Assesses basic functional status to help quantify disability and care needs.
Advice
- Use results to assess a patient’s ability to perform ADLs; a full functional assessment should also include IADLs and, when relevant, AADLs.
- Results can inform discharge planning and care needs based on identified deficits, such as:
- Physical and/or occupational therapy programs.
- Fall-prevention measures.
- Home safety evaluations.
- Long-term care planning.
- Caregiver support services.
- Trend results over time to follow progress with rehabilitative and supportive interventions.
