Glucose Infusion Rate (GIR)
Quantifies the rate at which glucose is administered intravenously.
Advice
- Care should be taken to avoid prolonged, inadvertent hyperglycemia.
- Full-term infants generally have a target GIR of 4-6 mg/kg/min, while premature infants have a target of 6-8 mg/kg/min due to their higher caloric requirements.
- If hypoglycemia is persistent, additional workup to determine the cause should be performed.
