Advice
  • This tool can be used to determine appropriate treatments and medical services for patients based on their individual obesity-related risks and complications.
  • For patients undergoing bariatric surgery planning:
    • Stage 3 and 4 are associated with increased risk of postoperative complications, including a higher 30-day mortality.
    • Patients found to be in higher stages should be counseled on the increased risk of postoperative complications.
    • However, this tool should not be used to exclude patients from surgical consideration. The benefits of surgery often outweigh the risks and should be assessed by the clinician on a case-by-case basis.
