HIV Incidence Risk Index for MSM (HIRI-MSM)

Identifies MSM at risk of HIV infection.

This questionnaire can be used to determine risk of acquiring HIV by men who have sex with men (MSM).

Ask the patient the following questions:

How old are you today (years)?

How many men have you had sex with in the last 6 months?

In the last 6 months, how many times did you have receptive anal sex (you were the bottom) with a man without a condom?

How many of your male sex partners were HIV positive?

In the last 6 months, how many times did you have insertive anal sex (you were the top) without a condom with a man who was HIV positive?

In the last 6 months, have you used methamphetamines such as crystal or speed?

In the last 6 months, have you used poppers (amyl nitrate)?

Management
  • Patients in the high risk category should be especially counseled for PrEP therapy. It may also be appropriate for patients in lower risk categories to receive PrEP. All patients should receive counseling on preventive measures.
