Ulcerative Colitis Endoscopic Index of Severity (UCEIS)
Assesses the endoscopic severity of ulcerative colitis.
Advice
While higher scores suggest more severe disease, we are not aware of any current management recommendations based on UCEIS scores.
- Chen et al. (2021) identified a baseline UCEIS score ≥6 as being associated with a high probability of mesalazine treatment failure.
- High baseline UCEIS scores were also linked to a loss of response to biologics, with Di Ruscio et al. (2021) reporting scores ≥7 as predictive of colectomy within a median time of 5 months.
- Additionally, Yan et al. (2023) suggested that a UCEIS score ≤3 could define clinical remission in UC patients treated with vedolizumab, while scores ≥4 may indicate a need for therapeutic escalation.
